Fastener Basics – The history of fasteners

Definition of fastener: Fastener refers to the general term of mechanical parts used when two or more parts (or components) are tightly connected into a whole. It is an extremely widely used class of mechanical parts, its standardization, serialization, the degree of universality is very high, therefore, some people have the national standard of a class of fasteners called standard fasteners, or referred to as standard parts. Screw is the most common term for fasteners, which is called as an oral phrase.

There are two versions of the history of fasteners in the world. One is Archimedes’ “Archimedes spiral” water conveyor from the 3rd century BC. It is said to be the origin of the screw, which is widely used in field irrigation. Egypt and other Mediterranean countries still use this kind of water conveyor, therefore, Archimedes is called the “father of the screw”.

The other version is the mortise and tenon structure from the New Century period of China more than 7,000 years ago. The mortise and tenon structure is the crystallization of ancient Chinese wisdom. Many wooden components unearthed at Hemudu People site are mortise and tenon joints inserted with concave and convex pairs. Bronze nails were also used in the tombs of the Central Plains during the Yin and Shang Dynasties and the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods. In the Iron Age, the Han Dynasty, more than 2,000 years ago, iron nails began to appear with the development of ancient smelting techniques.

Chinese fasteners have a long history. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, with the opening of coastal treaty ports, new fasteners such as foreign nails from abroad came to China, bringing new development to Chinese fasteners.

At the beginning of the 20th century, China’s first iron shop producing fasteners was founded in Shanghai. At that time, it was mainly dominated by small workshops and factories. In 1905, the predecessor of Shanghai Screw Factory was established.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the scale of fastener production continued to expand, and reached a turning point in 1953, when the Ministry of State Machinery set up a specialized fastener production factory, and the fastener production was included in the national plan.

In 1958, the first batch of fastener standards were issued.

In 1982, the Standardization Administration formulated 284 items of product standards that referred to, were equivalent to or equivalent to international standards, and the production of fasteners in China began to meet international standards.

With the rapid development of fastener industry, China has become the world’s first producer of fasteners.
